Chapters

What are Chapters?

Chapters are the heart and soul of the BC & Yukon Branch, and are involved in all of The Kidney Foundation’s fundraising and public awareness activities.

Chapter members (AKA volunteers) join together across BC& the Yukon to make a meaningful difference in the lives of kidney patients and their families. Members also help raise public awareness of the seriousness of kidney disease, encouraging people to keep their kidneys healthy.

Activities

The roles and activities of each chapter’s members are considered the front-line connection with kidney patients, family members and caregivers. Members engage in a number of patient service activities, such as the provision of patient comfort items (e.g. TV/VCR’s, microwaves and ice machines) at various dialysis facilities.

Chapters also play a pivotal role in promoting social connections among people who are affected by kidney disease. What originally began as summer barbecues and holiday parties, these social activities have grown to include informal peer support and education programs.

As a result of these patient service and social activities, chapter members have established strong connections with those affected by kidney disease, in turn helping them through uncertain or stressful times.

Public Awareness

Chapter members are key players in developing public and patient awareness. The focus of this important role is to educate the public on services offered by the BC & Yukon Branch of The Kidney Foundation. As such, chapter members participate in developing patient and family forums  on timely topics.

Many chapters have developed a Speaker's Bureau, specializing in the area of organ donation. Members also take part in local health fairs, promoting The Kidney Foundation through mediums such as displays and information pieces.

Volunteer Commitment

The volunteer commitment of chapter members is an integral part of The Kidney Foundation, and the energy and dedication that goes into planning and organizing major fund-raising programs such as the March door-to-door campaigns is second-to-none.
