Top Tips to Minimize the Clutter

Most of us are guilty of holding onto things “just in case,” keeping old clothes that don’t fit and not letting useless things go because we feel guilty or we have feel a sentimental connection to them. Over the course of a lifetime the average person will spend 153 days searching for misplaced items! Add to that the time spent cleaning and organizing, and the amount of money and energy spent, it really makes you question the value in having so much stuff.

There are many benefits to owning less – more time for yourself and more money for the important things.  Also, less physical clutter can lead to less mental clutter. But you don’t have to become a minimalist to reap the benefits of owning less. Just try these tips to help you clear out the clutter:

One thing in, one thing out.

This is simple advice but it is essential to help reduce clutter. Every time you bring something new into your home, you must remove something else. This encourages you to evaluate both new purchases and the value of the things you already have in your home.

If you haven’t used something in the last 6 months get rid of it.

Unless it’s something very special (like your wedding dress) or something seasonal (like your winter coat), if you haven’t worn it or used it in the last 6 months then let it go.

Keep a donation bag.

Keeping a bag or box in an out-of-the-way place will encourage you to get rid of the things you don’t need. Knowing that someone else can get some use out of an item and that by donating it you will be helping others are both great motivating factors to clear out things you don’t use. When the bag is full call Kidney Clothes and we will repurpose those items into funds to support Canadians living with kidney disease.
