What is the procedure to donate a vehicle?
Complete and submit the online donation form or call the Kidney Car Line 1-866-788-CARS. Note: If calling, please be sure to have your V.I.N number on hand (found on the vehicle ownership, on the windshield of the car or on insurance papers)
Our local Kidney Car tow service will contact the donor within 24hrs to schedule a convenient pickup time and date. Towing is free and available within 48hrs*. *Some geographical restrictions may apply. Please contact Kidney Car to verify if 48hr service is guaranteed in your area.
The registered owner must provide the signed vehicle ownership (to the name of the tow service) and a set of keys to the tow truck operator upon pickup. License plates must be removed; our friendly tow service can help remove them if needed. If plates are left on the vehicle they will be destroyed.
Remember all the great (or not so great) times you had with your car. Tears are acceptable, but smiles are recommended as your car is towed away. The donor will receive their charitable tax receipt within 4-6 weeks from The Kidney Foundation of Canada.
Will I be contacted before my vehicle is towed away?
Yes, the tow service will call you to make the arrangements. Our goal is to arrange a pickup time and date most convenient for the donor.
How do you determine the value of the tax receipt?
The value of the tax receipt is determined by what is done with the vehicle once donated. All donations qualify for a minimum $300 tax receipt; if a vehicle is resold in its current condition the tax receipt will be for the full sale amount. In unique cases if a vehicle is of a high value and in excellent condition an appraisal may be arranged. If you feel your vehicle is of significant value, please contact our Kidney Car staff.
When will I receive my tax receipt?
Approximately 4-6 weeks after the vehicle has been towed away. Delays may be experienced if we are attempting to resell the vehicle. Please phone the Kidney Car line at 1-866-788-2277 to determine the vehicle's status in the donation process.
I have not received my tax receipt yet or I have misplaced my tax receipt, what can I do?
Send an email to Kidney Car at firstname.lastname@example.org regarding your tax receipt inquiry, please be sure to include details such as the name of the registered owner of the vehicle, the confirmation number, and a contact name. Alternatively, you can call the Kidney Car Program at 1-866-788-2277 to speak with a telephone representative who will ask for your vehicle donation details and follow-up on your inquiry.
What if my vehicle is not sold or auctioned?
Any vehicles not resold or auctioned will be recycled by our professional recycling partners. Mercury switches, oils and other harmful pollutants are removed and processed in the most environmentally responsible manner.
Will you repair my vehicle to make it pass a safety and emissions test?
Unfortunately we do not have the resources to do so. All vehicles are resold strictly “as is” in their current condition.
Is the ownership signed over to The Kidney Foundation?
No. The ownership will be signed over to our Kidney Car Partner towing the vehicle. Our Partner's company name will be provided to you at the time of your Kidney Car donation. The registered owner will need to sign and date on the "To be completed by seller” section of the application for transfer.
Will you still accept my car without the ownership?
No. Unfortunately, we require the ownership to verify proof of registration. If you do not have the ownership, please go to your local Ministry of Transportation office to have a new ownership issued.
Should I cancel my auto insurance before I donate?
No, please cancel your auto insurance once the vehicle has been towed away. We do not require that a vehicle is insured in order to donate.
When will my vehicle be picked up?
The removal of vehicles is made during regular business hours. From 8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m. Monday to Friday. In some areas weekend service is offered although this is at the sole discretion of the tow service provider.
Is the ownership handed over at the time of pick-up?
Yes, please ensure that the registered owner has signed and dated it before giving it to the tow truck operator.
Does the owner have to be present for the removal?
No, if the registered owner is unavailable for the removal, please leave the signed ownership and car keys in the glove box for the scheduled removal date and have the owner indicate to the tow service that he/she will not be present for the vehicle pick up.
Can the Executor/Executrix, or Power of Attorney sign the ownership?
Yes, as long as a copy of the will or other witnessed document identifying the signor as Executor/Executrix or Power of Attorney is provided.
How long does this whole process take?
Once we receive donation information, it should take no more than 48 hours* for the vehicle to be towed away.

Is there a charge for this service?
No, your vehicle will be towed away absolutely free.
I live in a very rural area, can you still pick-up my vehicle?
Please call the Kidney Car hotline at 1-866-788-2277 to verify that a towing service is available in your area.
The car is in rough shape and it won’t start. Will you still accept it?
Yes. However your vehicle must have ALL 4 tires on it, otherwise we will not be able to tow it away.
Do you accept boats?
What vehicles do you NOT accept?
Unless they can be resold - motor homes; vehicles with missing tires; vehicles that are full of garbage; vehicles that have liens, unpaid parking tickets, and outstanding debts; vehicles that can not be accessed by tow truck.
What classifies as not accessible to tow truck?
Vehicle must have accessibility to front or rear. Vehicles with missing wheels and tires cannot be safely towed. Vehicles blocked by large amounts of snow or debris are also considered inaccessible.
Can I drop off my vehicle at the recycler?
Yes. After your online form has been submitted, call the Kidney Car hotline at 1-866-788-2277 for directions to the nearest participating recycler facility in your area.
Does my vehicle need to be certified and e-tested in order to donate?
No. We accept vehicles in any mechanical condition so long as they can be safely towed.
