New Year's Resolutions that Help Make a Difference
Making New Year’s resolutions is a time-honoured tradition. Often centered around things you want to change, move more, spend time more effectively, it also is a good time to take a step back and consider some of the areas where you can make a real difference both to your physical and mental health.
1 – Register to Be an Organ Donor:
Two minutes can save a life. If you haven’t already done so, take two minutes to register to be an organ donor www.beadonor.ca/kidneyfoundationofcanada and talk to your family about your wishes.
2 – Learn something new:
Have you considered volunteering? You can make a difference in your community by giving of your time. From programs to public awareness to fundraising and administration, there is something for everyone. This may be the opportunity to learn a new skill or to use your experience to help others.
3 – Take Care of You by Sticking to the Renal Diet:
It’s easy for all of us, whether on a renal diet or not, to indulge over the holidays. For a dialysis patient though, those small indulgences can sure add up, so it’s important to take control and spend some time planning your meals to get back on track. Visit kidneycommunitykitchen.ca for recipes and meal planning tips to help.
4 – Take Care of You and Keep Moving
The holidays can be a time of busy activities, or for some it is the quiet down time to sleep in, stay in your pajamas all day, but it’s important to stay moving even when it’s cold outside. If the weather is your excuse, consider a stroll at a local walking track or mall.
5– Plan an Event
Have you ever thought of being an event planner? We can help, and you don’t even need to go back to school. If you’d like to organize a small dinner party, a summer backyard carnival, a walk-a-dog-athon or even an online fundraising challenge, then we have the tools for you to become a Blue Builder and help build a stronger kidney community. Each year we are fortunate to have the support of people just like you organize and plan events on our behalf.
