1 in 10 Canadians Live with Kidney Disease. It's Time to Step Up!

What do you mean - It's Time to Step Up?

Sometimes hearing 1 in 10 doesn't accurately highlight the impact of kidney disease. The impact is that 3.5 million Canadians live with, and die from, this chronic illness. For those with significant loss of kidney function, life is consumed by specialists' appointments, renal diets, dialysis or transplant treatments, physical and emotional side effects, lost wages, and persistent feelings of being unwell.

Kidney disease is serious. The depth of its impact on the person and his/her family and rate at which it is increasing as a diagnosis is scary. Yet, often, it doesn't get the level of attention it deserves or requires. It's time to Step Up means bringing kidney disease out of the shadows and into the conversation; generating attention and funds for support, research, and medical advances on par with the utter relentless nature of the illness.

Why Walk?

Your steps make a difference. Here are some examples of what we accomplished thanks to last year's walk:
Difference #1: The Kidney Foundation of Canada can continue supporting patient services to help ease the burden of living with kidney disease. As an example, last year the Foundation purchased 3 infant scales for the equipment loan program. For infants on peritoneal dialysis receiving an infant scale means the infant can go home from the hospital as parents can accurately weigh their child and determine the appropriate dialysis regimen. This is huge.
Difference #2: The Kidney Foundation of Canada can now wage a call to action for Canada to increase the rate of organs transplanted by 50% in 5 years. Considering the rate of transplant has only increased 26% in the last decade... this is aggressive. With nearly 75% of the over 4,600 Canadians on the transplant wait list waiting for a kidney this change is vital.
Difference #3: Supporting The Kidney Foundation's National Research Program, one of the most important sources of funding for scientists conducting kidney-related research in Canada, has changed a diagnosis of kidney disease from little chance of survival to being able to lead a fulfilling life.

Kidney Walk Details

This event is perfect for the whole family (including children and pets). It is designed for runners, walkers, strollers and participants with limited mobility. Sign up as an individual or form a team (no team member limits!) with friends, family or coworkers. Gather pledges to raise funds and awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donation. If you are unable to walk, consider still collecting pledges and come out to Volunteer OR just come out to enjoy the morning with us. There will be lots of entertainment and some refreshments. Kidney Walk, put on by The Kidney Foundation of Canada, raises awareness and funds for personal supports and lifesaving research around kidney disease and organ donation. It is the only nationwide event of its kind. It is also a great opportunity for friends and family to rally with or on behalf of their loved one, showing support and meeting others who are journeying through similar health struggles. When people come together at an event like Kidney Walk you realize you are not alone… and on some days that can make all the difference.
