Taking a Leadership Role in Advocating for Access to Transplants

The Kidney Foundation recently participated in a key stakeholder interview with Health Canada for the Organ Donation & Transplantation Collaborative. Health Canada conducted interviews in June with a view to presenting a report to the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers of Health in the fall. Findings are expected to inform a shared vision and guiding principles for a more effective organ donation and transplantation system in Canada.

The collaborative was formed following the Minister of Health's mandate letter of October 2017 that identified organ donation as a priority to ‘Facilitate collaboration on an organ and tissues donation and transplantation system that gives Canadians timely and effective access to care’.

Subsequently, The Kidney Foundation of Canada appeared as witness before the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Health (HESA) in view of the study on the role of the federal government in improving access to organ donation.

The Foundation has also intensified its key messaging and advocacy for equitable access to transplants for all Canadians, for systems improvements and for greater accountability in order to ensure that no opportunities for deceased organ donations are missed.
